Colin Farrell has delighted fans as The Penguin, but now they are concerned that he may leave the character soon. Farrell was unrecognizable as the iconic villain opposite Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the 2022 movie. He will again reprise the role for the upcoming HBO series, The Penguin. However, will it be the last time Collin Farrell will essay Gotham City’s “Gentleman of Crime” or will he return in The Batman Part 2?

Here is everything we know about Farrell’s return as the Penguin and if he is leaving the role.

Will Colin Farrell return as the Penguin in The Batman Part 2?

Fans need not worry, as director Matt Reeves has confirmed that Colin Farrell will be reprising his role as the Penguin in the 2026 The Batman sequel.

Reeves also revealed that the movie will be directly connected to the upcoming spin-off series by HBO, The Penguin. Speaking with SFX magazine for its October 2024 issue, Reeves announced that the script is almost ready.

“The plan is to shoot next year, and we’re finishing up the script now. Colin [Farrell] will be part of the movie. We’ve shared [the script] as we’ve been going along with DC and the studio, and they’re super excited,” the filmmaker stated. (via Deadline)

Reeves went on to reveal that the upcoming The Penguin series will serve as “entry point” to the sequel. It will pave the way for the movie’s storyline which is “absolutely connected to where we leave things in the series.”

Will Colin Farrell leave the Penguin role after The Batman Part 2?

There is no confirmation if Colin Farrell will leave the Penguin role after The Batman Part 2. However, the chances of him returning seem less promising.

In an interview with Total Film, Colin Farrell revealed how much he despised the make-up process for the role. When asked about the possibility of putting on the prosthetics again in the future, he stated, “I don’t know, man. Don’t get me wrong – I loved it – but it got in on me a little bit. By the end of it, I was bitching and moaning to anyone who would listen to me that I f—ing wanted it to be finished. I tried to remind them that I had ‘grumpy gratitude.’”

Despite the grueling hours in the make-up chair, Farrell was “still grateful, and honored.” He said, “I grew up watching Burgess Meredith [who played the role in the ’60s TV series], and then Danny DeVito [in Tim Burton‘s 1992 film Batman Returns] was my Penguin – so being a part of the lineage of that storytelling, I really did feel privileged.”

“Lauren [LeFranc] said, ‘Look, if I could find a way that makes sense, would you talk about it?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely,’” the actor further told the outlet. “And maybe in a year, I would. But when I finished I was like, ‘I never want to put that f—ing suit and that f—ing head on again,’” Farrell concluded.

Judging by Colin Farrell’s statements, the possibility of seeing him as The Penguin again does look bleak. Nevertheless, fans remain hopeful for the future.
