September 11th will always be remembered as many things-- a day of heartbreak, sacrifice, loss, and true patriotism. Even 23 years later, no sacrifice goes unnoticed, and the MLB played a part in making sure of that.

The two teams that did the most, of course, were the New York Mets and the New York Yankees. Players on the field wore hats honoring the many departments that were involved in the various rescue efforts on that day and every day since. NYPD and FDNY were greatly honored, along with New York's Sanitation Department (DSNY) and the Correction Department.

Francisco Lindor, the shortstop for the Mets, wore a custom glove honoring these first responders, and it couldn't have looked better.

Of course, all 30 teams paid tribute prior to their respective games Wednesday night, however, only the two New York teams had the option to don the NYPD and FDNY logos. Other teams were given 9/11 memorial ribbons to go on the sides of their hats, and even the Blue Jays were given ribbons with both the Canadian and American flags.

The tributes that preceded the games took place on the field, honoring all victims (civilian and first responders), and coverage came from many different angles throughout the MLB. MLB Together had a major hand in organizing service events outside of the games, including a meal packing event to aid the City Harvest food bank.

The Kansas City Royals also held a 9/11 stair climb event last week to kick off the week of remembrance. Stair climb events are held for the purpose of honoring those first responders that seamlessly climbed the towers to save civilians. First responders routinely take on 110 stories in full gear to honor the fallen each year.

Players, coaches, and staff all pitched in to make this week a true week for American patriots. The efforts of each moving part, no matter how small, could not be overstated during the week of remembrance. Once again, the MLB hit a home run with their efforts to show that it is about more than the game.
