Nine dogs and six cats were rescued from a burning home in Stamford Thursday afternoon and were treated at animal hospitals, officials said. Firefighters responded to a basement kitchenette fire at a home on Noble Avenue, in the Waterside section of Stamford, around 1:30 p.m., said Deputy Stamford Fire Chief Eric Lorenz. "When the firefighters went into the basement, they quickly encountered a dog; and from that point on - as they continued to advance a hoseline into the house - they kept coming across more and more animals inside the building," Lorenz said. A number of the pets were taken to Stamford's Cornell University Veterinary Specialists, while others were treated elsewhere. First responders performed lifesaving measures on some of the pets, all of whom were said to be doing well Thursday night, with the exception of one cat that died, Lorenz said. "It was a team effort and I'm very proud of the way everyone worked together to save so many of these animals," Lorenz said. He says no people were injured, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. "
