The Oakland Police Officers Association (OPOA) has expressed gratitude to California Governor Gavin Newsom for deploying additional California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers to Oakland as violent crime and property crime continue to rise in the city. In a letter released today, the union acknowledged the positive impact of the CHP’s increased presence, which has quadrupled the number of CHP patrol shifts in the city.

Oakland is experiencing a surge in violent crime, with a recent report from the East Bay Times showing that violent crime has increased by 174% since 2020. Overall crime in 2023 is at its highest level in two decades, doubling since 2020.

OPOA President Huy Nguyen highlighted the challenges faced by Oakland police officers, citing deep budget cuts and understaffing as major obstacles. He also criticized Oakland’s elected officials for their reluctance to fully support public safety efforts.

In his letter, Nguyen praised Governor Newsom’s decision to boost the CHP presence in Oakland, calling it an "invaluable partnership" that has provided crucial support during these difficult times. The OPOA urged the governor to extend the deployment of CHP officers to help further protect the city’s residents and businesses.
