    WATCH: Elk seen roaming around Iowa City

    JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa — The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said an elk has been seen roaming around Iowa City.

    On Thursday the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office shared a dashcam video on Facebook from one of their deputy’s that captured the elk on Shannon Drive in Iowa City early Monday morning. According to the sheriff’s office, there have been multiple sightings of the elk in the area.

    Elk were once native to Iowa, but were pushed out as the state became more populated and settlers began hunting the elk. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the last reported sighting of a native elk was in 1871.

    The DNR said elk sightings in the state have been increasing every fall.
