Sub-freezing temperatures to hit local areas; crops and plumbing at risk

MEDFORD — Issued by the National Weather Service at 12:10 PM on September 12, 2024.

The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning and Frost Advisory for parts of Klamath Basin, Northern and Eastern Klamath County, and Western and Central Lake County. Residents in the affected areas should prepare for sub-freezing temperatures that could damage crops, sensitive vegetation, and outdoor plumbing.

    Sub-Freezing Temperatures Expected Overnight

The Freeze Warning is in effect from 2 AM to 9 AM PDT Friday, with temperatures expected to drop as low as 29 degrees Fahrenheit in cities such as Chemult, Crescent, and Fort Rock. Additionally, a Frost Advisory has been issued for the same time frame, predicting temperatures as low as 34 degrees Fahrenheit in Dairy, Bonanza, and Lorella, leading to potential frost formation.

    Impact on Agriculture and Infrastructure

These weather conditions pose a significant threat to crops and other sensitive vegetation. Unprotected outdoor plumbing may also be at risk of damage. Residents are advised to take precautionary measures, such as covering plants or bringing them indoors, and ensuring outdoor pipes are adequately insulated to prevent freezing.

    Preparedness Actions

    • Cover or bring in tender plants.
    • Insulate outdoor pipes or let faucets drip to prevent freezing.
    • Avoid travel during early morning hours if possible, as frost can cause slippery roads.

"These cold conditions can have severe impacts on agriculture and local infrastructure," the National Weather Service warned, urging immediate action to mitigate potential damage.
