Record-Breaking Warmth Expected in Northern Michigan: Extended Dry Stretch Continues

Warm and sunny weather with vibrant sunsets to persist into next week

GAYLORD — Issued by the National Weather Service at 2:35 AM on September 13, 2024.

Northern Michigan is set to experience an extended period of warm and dry weather that may break temperature records over the weekend. According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a high-pressure system centered over James Bay will continue to dominate the region's weather pattern, resulting in temperatures well above average for mid-September.

    Warm and Dry Conditions Persist

The current pattern of amplified ridging over the Great Lakes is expected to keep northern Michigan warm and dry through next week. High temperatures are forecasted to reach the mid-80s across most locations, with some areas, notably around Traverse City (TVC), potentially seeing highs in the upper 80s. These temperatures are about 10-15 degrees above normal, as typical highs for this time of year are in the low 70s.

Wildfire smoke lingering in the atmosphere may cause vibrant orange and red hues during sunrises and sunsets, although it is not expected to significantly impact surface air quality.

    Potential Record-Breaking Temperatures This Weekend

The high-pressure system will continue to maintain clear skies and stable conditions, which, combined with warm air advection, could push temperatures into record-breaking territory over the weekend. Overnight lows will remain mild, dipping into the 50s, contributing to an overall stretch of unseasonably warm weather.

While remnants of Francine linger to the south, they are not expected to affect northern Michigan, keeping the region dry and warm.

    Marine and Aviation Forecast

For those on the water, the high-pressure system will maintain light winds and calm conditions, with winds turning easterly at or below 10 knots on Friday. Boaters can expect clear skies and favorable conditions throughout the weekend.

In terms of aviation, clear skies and light winds will dominate, although some patchy fog may develop overnight, causing MVFR to IFR visibility at times.

Outlook: Warm and Dry Weather to Continue Into Next Week

The warm and dry pattern is expected to extend well into next week, with ensemble models suggesting continued ridging over the region. While some models hint at potential precipitation midweek, the overall forecast remains dry with high confidence in above-average temperatures.
