Today is Friday the 13th and while it's just a normal day for many of us, slasher movies suggest it could be unlucky.

If you're one of those who don't want to tempt fate on Friday 13th, then you might not want to walk under a ladder, break a mirror or open an umbrella indoors.

And, for safe measure, avoid black cats.

But fast-food fans are in luck this week as chains are offering freebies to celebrate the superstitious holiday.

Krispy Kreme is giving away a dozen Original Glazed doughnuts for just 13 cents with the purchase of any dozen or 16 Minis, USA Today reported.

The exact origins of when and why Friday the 13th became unlucky are unknown.

However, it is likely to have Christian roots because it's stated that in the Bible, Judas - a person who is said to have betrayed Jesus - was the 13th guest at the Last Supper.
