Josh Allen 'praying' for Tua Tagovailoa after concussion as QB's emotion clear

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has said he’s ’praying’ for his opposite number Tua Tagovailoa and his family after he suffered a concussion .

Tagovailoa struggled during the Miami Dolphins ' 31-10 loss against the Bills on Thursday night, throwing 145 yards, three interceptions and a touchdown before the start of the fourth quarter. But late in the third quarter during a fourth-down scramble, the 26-year-old suffered a match-ending injury.

Attempting to drive up the middle of the field to stretch a play, Tagovailoa smashed into Bills safety Damar Hamlin in a worrying collision as the Dolphins signal caller crashed to the ground as his head flung back, leaving his hands flailing in the air.

The seriousness of the collision saw the coverage cut to a commercial as the medical team rushed to the stricken star. Tagovailoa was immediately ruled out for the rest of the match with a concussion.

Following the game, Bills quarterback Allen echoed concerns regarding Tagovailoa’s health given he suffered multiple concussions during the 2022 season that led to questions about whether he should continue to play.

“If you know Tua outside of football, like you do, like I do, you can’t help but feel for him,” Allen said. “He’s a great football player but he’s an even greater human being. He’s one of the best humans on the planet.

“I’ve got a lot of love for him, and I’m just praying for him and his family and hoping everything is OK. It’s tough. This game of football that we play, it’s got its highs and it’s got its lows, and that’s definitely one of the lows.”

The Dolphins and Tagovailoa face the Seattle Seahawks next in the NFL in 10 days. Miami will be hopeful their starting quarterback can play but the league’s protocols could rule him out of action.

"Right now, [it] is more about getting a proper procedural evaluation and taking it one day at a time," Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said after the game. “The furthest thing from my mind is what is the timeline. We just need to evaluate and just worry about my teammate. ... We'll get more information [Friday] and then take it day by day from there."

Following the departure of Stefon Diggs , who was traded with a 2024 sixth-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round selection to the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick, Allen asserted it had become his duty to step up within the team and take on a greater leadership role.

"I think it's an opportunity for myself to grow as a leader,” he said back in April. “And to bring along some of these young guys and new guys that we've brought into our team. And that's an opportunity, frankly, that I'm very excited about. It's something that's going to be very challenging, but I'm very willing to do it."
