The biggest upset of the 2024 college football season up to this point occurred last weekend when Notre Dame lost to Northern Illinois, 16-14, in South Bend. Notre Dame was favored by more than four touchdowns in that contest. Notre Dame dropped from No. 5 to No. 18 in the country as the Fighting Irish look to return to their winning ways against the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday. Purdue defeated Indiana State, 49-0, on August 31 in its only game of the season.
Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Purdue's Ross-Ade Stadium in Indiana. Notre Dame is a 9.5-point favorite in the latest Notre Dame vs. Purdue odds via SportsLine consensus, while the over/under for total points scored is 47.5. Why Notre Dame can cover
Despite last weekend's upset loss, Notre Dame opened the season with a 23-13 victory over No. 20 Texas A&M at College Station. Notre Dame was 10-1 over its last 11 games against unranked teams coming into last weekend, winning those 10 games by an average of 32.9 points. The Fighting Irish last played Purdue in 2021 and won 27-13 at home and Notre Dame has won six straight games against Purdue by an average of 12.4 points.
The Fighting Irish have one of the most dominant defenses in the country, allowing just 14.5 points per game this season. Notre Dame forced two turnovers in the win over Texas A&M. Although Notre Dame is averaging just 18.5 points per game this season, that's no fault of sophomore running back Jeremiyah Love , who has rushed for 170 yards on 6.8 yards per carry over Notre Dame's first two games. See picks at SportsLine .
Why Purdue can cover
Purdue had a dominant opening showing in its 49-0 victory over Indiana State, an FCS school. Returning starting quarterback Hudson Card had a near-perfect performance in Week 1 of the season. He completed 24 of 25 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns in the victory. The fifth-year senior threw for 2,387 yards and 15 touchdowns with eight interceptions last year after spending his first three years at Texas . The Purdue defense matched the offense's efficiency, allowing just 154 total yards in the shutout.
Purdue has had ample time to scout and game plan for Notre Dame. They scheduled a weaker first opponent and followed it with a bye last week in hopes of knocking off Notre Dame for the first time since 2007. But Notre Dame showed offensive deficiencies last week against Northern Illinois with a passing attack still developing chemistry with quarterback Riley Leonard transferring in from Duke. Leonard hasn't thrown a touchdown in either of his first two games and if the Purdue defense can frustrate him, the Boilermakers can cover the number on Saturday. See picks at SportsLine .
How to make Notre Dame vs. Purdue picks
SportsLine's model is leaning Over on the total, projecting 51 combined points. It also says one side of the spread hits well over 50% of the time. You can see the model's pick at SportsLine .
