Tired of your potatoes sprouting and turning mushy before you even have a chance to use them? Food blogger Jerry James Stone has a nifty trick that could keep your spuds fresh for up to six months.

Jerry shares his simple yet effective food storage hack , which hinges on one key element: "Storing potatoes is pretty simple," he says. "For the most part... [potatoes] like being in a dark, cool place."

While many might know that potatoes prefer the dark, Jerry reveals the "best way" to ensure they stay fresh , which includes an unexpected storage method. His top tip? "Store them in a brown paper bag," Jerry suggests. "Just a brown paper bag, opened up", reports the Express .

He further clarifies: "You don't want to store them in plastic and you definitely don't want to store them in a sealed plastic bag, because they don't like the moisture."

Jerry emphasizes: "When they're stored in a brown paper bag, you want to keep that bag open, and place it somewhere that's a cool and sort of well-ventilated dark place."

He cautions that potatoes exposed to light can turn green and develop a bitter taste, hence the need for darkness.

For optimal longevity, Jerry notes that potatoes should be kept at a temperature between seven to 10 degrees Celsius; any warmer and they may start to sprout prematurely.

He advises finding a spot in the house or garage where the temperature stays consistently around seven to 10C, as this will help the potatoes last the longest.

Jerry assured: "Potatoes can last up to three months this way; I've even had them last for up to six months and still keep fresh."

He also emphasized the importance of keeping potatoes away from ethylene-producing produce to prolong their shelf life.

Some common examples of such produce include:.

Moreover, Jerry strongly recommended against refrigerating potatoes. He explained that not only does the fridge light affect them, but there's another reason as well.

"Putting potatoes in the fridge actually takes those starches within the potato and starts converting them into sugar."

"And that results just makes for a really unpleasant taste when it comes to potatoes."
