Miami-Dade, FL - Miami-Dade County's school board rejected a proposal to recognize October as LGBTQ+ history during a board meeting Wednesday night.

While Broward County has chosen to honor the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals, Miami-Dade has continued to resist, marking the third consecutive year of such a decision.

PRISM Executive Director Maxx Fenning attributed this discrepancy to the differing makeup of the two boards.

Fenning emphasized that these recognitions are essential to acknowledging the struggles and achievements of marginalized communities.

"So many folks have faced so much hardship based on discrimination and bigotry," Fenning told Local 10 News WPLG , "and it is simply a way of recognizing that, and more importantly, celebrating and recognizing the way in which so many people in such a diverse country of people have been able to overcome those challenges."

The Miami-Dade School Board's recent vote came after heated public comments and despite assurances that the recognition would not affect curriculum or classroom instruction.

Board member Lucia Baez-Geller, who sponsored the item, argued that recognizing LGBTQ+ contributions could foster a sense of belonging among students.

The debate comes at a time when LGBTQ+ youth are facing significant challenges, including higher rates of mental health issues and suicide ideation.

Fenning stressed the importance of sending a message of acceptance and support to these young people.

"Even if a school board is going to vote to pass a proclamation like this, there is so much richness and community and richness within Miami-Dade County, there are people here for them, that are fighting for them, and they can and will go on to do great things," Fenning told Local 10 News WPLG .

As the November school board elections approach, Fenning expressed hope for a shift in Miami-Dade's stance.

The outcomes of these elections could significantly impact the future of LGBTQ+ recognition in the county's schools.
