Steve Spurrier went 20-3 all-time in his career in the Southeastern Conference against Kentucky . Now, one of his former programs in South Carolina is coming off another major win over them last weekend.
Spurrier discussed if the 31-6 outcome between the two last weekend was more about the Gamecocks or the Wildcats on ‘Another Dooley Noted Podcast’ this week. He felt it was a little of both but definitely had plenty to do with the “embarrassing” outing by UK .

“You can tell South Carolina was much better,” said Spurrier. “Mentally, physically, and everything else – prepared to play.”
“Yeah, Kentucky had a bad game coaching plan and everything,” Spurrier said. “It was embarrassing, I think, for them.”

To him, playing it in the bluegrass clearly didn’t have much impact either for Kentucky.
“Kentucky at home? That didn’t mean anything,” said Spurrier.
The Wildcats were awful offensively at the center of the 25-point loss. They posted just 183 yards of offense, including just 44 in the pass game at 35.3% completion. Their quarterbacks also threw a pair of interceptions while the unit fumbled the ball four times, albeit without losing one. That’s before their offensive line comes into it with five sacks allowed as the Gamecocks had 11 tackles for loss .
The defense also struggled in key spots that could have turned the game but only allowed the lead to grow.
The embarrassment for Kentucky has been much discussed over the last week. That includes these comments from Spurrier considering what the Gamecocks did to them to open conference play.
Herbstreit confirms Kentucky was a ‘lock’ to host College GameDay
Kentucky cost themselves a lot with their 25-point loss to South Carolina last weekend. That includes the chance of being the feature location for ESPN’s College GameDay on Saturday.
In a thread of tweets about this week’s location of Columbia for No. 16 LSU at South Carolina, Kirk Herbstreit explained that he and Chris Fowler would have originally been calling No. 1 Georgia at Kentucky this weekend. However, since they “spit the bit” with their 31-6 defeat to the Gamecocks, the show pivoted to the other conference game at the noon kickoff slot.
“ Because Kentucky spit the bit last week ,” Herbstreit tweeted . “ CGD was a lock for UK if Cats won last week and we would have called the game as well. But South Carolina dominating that game we always adjust to the results from the previous week.”
Sean McDonough, Greg McElroy, and Molly McGrath will now call ‘Dawgs vs. ‘Cats on ABC and ESPN+ instead. That’s the exact same broadcast team that called their loss to the Gamecocks.
Kentucky hasn’t hosted College GameDay in 17 seasons since back in 2007. That stretch will now continue on past this weekend with the Wildcats giving that opportunity up.
