Everything the Red Clay Strays touch seems to turn to gold these days. And this must-see cover of the classic Willie Nelson and Ray Charles duet they posted to YouTube yesterday is no exception. Performed at The Bluestone in Columbus, OH back in July, the Strays' brought their friend and the opener for the show, fellow Mobile, AL artist Justin Jeansonne, out on stage during their set to sing the duet, and if you're a fan of classic country, or just good music in general, this is sure to bring on the goosebumps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJjEp9S6yvA Written by Troy Seals and Eddy Setser and originally released by Nelson and Charles in 1984 on Charles'
Friendship record, "Seven Spanish Angels" quickly rose to the top spot on the country music charts and has been revered as a classic country ballad ever since. Telling a captivating story set in the American West, as many classic country tunes do, "Seven Spanish Angels" follows an outlaw and his lover on the run as they attempt to fend off law enforcement in a gunfight. If you've somehow been deprived of hearing the original, give it a listen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8A9Y1Dq_cQ And with the Red Clay Strays' Brandon Coleman singing Ray Charles' part and Jeansonne sounding eerily similar to Willie Nelson on his parts, their cover is one of the best I've heard. The Red Clay Strays have experienced an astronomical rise in popularity over the past year, catapulting out of relative obscurity as a result of the delayed viral response to their song "Wondering Why" off of their debut album
Moment of Truth . With the release of their sophomore effort Made By These Moments back in July, which will undoubtedly be one of the best records of the year, it's clear that the Mobile, AL outfit is well on their way to becoming one of the preeminent acts in country music. This "Seven Spanish Angels" cover is particularly cool to see, as just last summer the Red Clay Strays were playing the opening slot at a lot of their shows, and while on tour with Dierks Bentley, Coleman frequently joined Bentley on stage during his set to perform a cover of Waylon Jennings' "Lonesome, On'ry, and Mean." Now they're returning the favor, and worthy artists like Jeansonne are going to be able to reap the benefits. If you're impressed by Jeansonne's vocal prowess here, check out some of his original music, because ex-Marine is quite the songwriter in his own right.
