CBS Injury Expert Has Sobering Take On Tua Tagovailoa's Concussion

It remains to be seen when Tua Tagovailoa returns to the field, if at all. CBS Sports injury expert Marty Jaramillo doesn't think it will happen anytime soon.

The Miami Dolphins quarterback rocked the NFL landscape Thursday when he went down with another concussion against the Buffalo Bills at Hard Rock Stadium. It became Tagovailoa's third serious head injury over the last two years.

The incident had several fans and NFL players alike calling for Tagovailoa to consider retirement .

But if Tagovailoa still decides to return, Jaramillo believes that the Dolphins QB will need to be sidelined for "a minimum of eight to 12 weeks." The former ESPN injury analyst added that "retirement has to at least be in play" for Tagovailoa given his injury history.

Jaramillo called Tagovailoa's "fencing" position as a "textbook sign of a severe head injury."

"He hit his head twice," Jaramillo said. "First on the tackle, second on landing. This young man simply doesn't have the luxury of having multiple concussions and [then thinking] he will have a long career. ... [It's] not fair to himself and his family."

Last year, Tagovailoa openly admitted that he had pondered retirement following the 2022 season due to his head injuries.

Tagovailoa, however, decided against it. He ended up having his best statistical season in 2023, leading the NFL in passing yards (4,624) and tying for fifth in passing touchdowns (29).

Under normal circumstances, the 26-year-old Tagovailoa should be entering his prime. But his head injuries may very well shorten what shaped up to be a promising career.
