Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel revealed on Friday, September 13, the team's plan for moving forward at quarterback following Tua Tagovailoa's concussion during Thursday night's game against the Buffalo Bills.

Tagovailoa suffered the concussion in the third quarter when, while scrambling on a third down, he collided with Bills safety Damar Hamlin. This marks his third concussion since the start of the 2022 season, raising concerns about his long-term health.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, McDaniel announced that backup quarterback Skylar Thompson will take over as the starter moving forward.

"Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel says the team is moving forward with Skylar Thompson, but will sign a QB for depth," said NFL insider Ian Rapopor t.

Thompson has seen game action in the past, notably starting during the AFC Wild Card game against the Bills on January 15, 2023, when Tagovailoa was sidelined due to a concussion.

In that game, Thompson kept the Dolphins competitive, leading them to a brief 24-20 lead in the third quarter. Despite completing 18-of-45 passes for 220 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, he nearly guided the Dolphins to an upset victory, though they ultimately fell short, 34-31.

In addition to naming Thompson the starter, McDaniel also noted that the team is considering bringing in a veteran quarterback for depth purposes. Several names have already emerged, including former Dolphins quarterbacks Ryan Tannehill and Mike White, both of whom remain free agents.

There’s also the possibility of exploring trade options should Thompson falter. The Dolphins have reportedly shown interest in trading for veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in the past and could reignite those discussions if needed.

With Tagovailoa's status uncertain, the Dolphins are preparing to make adjustments as they aim to stay competitive in a tough AFC East.
