Corey Knebel, a former relief pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, just hit another rough patch in his already tumultuous career. After signing a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Angels in August 2024, Knebel hoped for a career revival.

Unfortunately, those hopes unraveled faster than anyone could have imagined. Knebel was recently released after a disastrous performance with the Angels' Triple-A affiliate, the Salt Lake Bees.

Knebel's numbers during his brief time with Salt Lake were staggering—but not in a good way. Over 4.2 innings, he allowed a jaw-dropping 13 runs on 17 hits, including two home runs. His ERA ballooned to a whopping 25.07, leaving many to wonder what went wrong with the once-dominant All-Star.

    A Glimmer of Hope?

This rapid downturn was a stark contrast to Knebel’s promising start earlier in the season with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights. There, he pitched 5.1 innings, didn’t allow a single hit or earned run, and struck out eight batters.

The Angels likely saw that performance and thought they were getting a revitalized version of Knebel. Instead, they got a pitcher who struggled mightily and ultimately allowed five earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning during his final appearance.

    Once Upon a Time

Knebel’s story wasn’t always one of frustration and struggle. Back in 2017, he was one of the most dominant relief pitchers in the league, boasting a 1.78 ERA and earning an All-Star nod while with the Milwaukee Brewers.

But injuries began to chip away at his dominance. Fast forward to 2022, and his last Major League appearance came with the Philadelphia Phillies, where it became evident his best days might be behind him.

Now at 33 years old, Knebel faces the tough reality that the end of his career may be approaching unless he can find a way to reignite the magic that once made him a feared presence on the mound.

    What’s Next for Knebel?

The release from the Angels leaves Knebel at a critical crossroads. While his current form suggests a steep uphill battle to return to the Major Leagues, the baseball world has seen comebacks from worse situations. The key for Knebel will be proving that his dominant days aren’t entirely in the rearview mirror.

As of now, Knebel remains a free agent, and whether or not another team is willing to take a chance on him remains to be seen. He’s in a position where every opportunity counts—if any still come his way.
