'Bothersome!' Commanders' Dan Quinn Frustrated by One Defensive Failure

The Washington Commanders defense could not contain Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield in their loss on Sunday. That is something the team looks to improve on heading into their home opener against the hated New York Giants.

Coach Dan Quinn spoke to the media on Thursday about what the defense needs to improve this week.

"Yeah, you know what, there's always teaching with that,” Quinn said. “And the thing that I said, if you miss tackles or you're missing sack opportunities, why? Why is that? And so sometimes it's as simple as, kind of taking the extra step where you're leaving your feet or lunging to go make it.”

The Commanders certainly had a hard time putting pressure on Mayfield, but even when they did, he would scramble and make things happen.

“Were we in the right space to try to contain him?” Quinn pondered. “Because the mobile quarterbacks who can extend plays, there's basically like two plays, the first one, and then as the person gets outta the pocket, the second one.

“And we'll do a good job of that this week because that's definitely one of Daniel Jones' strengths as well. But we do prepare for that and going against our offense and the quarterbacks here who are mobile, get outside.

“We're equipped for that, but when you don't handle it, yeah, it's definitely bothersome."

Jones is less than a year removed from a torn ACL, so he might not be quite as mobile as he used to be. The Commanders front four need to do a lot better at getting push and pressure this week than they did last week.

The Giants took a blowout of their own, and Jones is prone to taking sacks and throwing interceptions. The Commanders' defense needs to take advantage of that as the two teams do business on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
