BENTON TWP. (WWJ) — Michigan State Police investigators believe a Flint woman may have fallen asleep shortly before a single-car crash that claimed her life early Friday morning.

Around 3:15 a.m. on Sept. 13 MSP troopers from the Lansing post were called to the area of the northbound I-69 expressway near Vermontville Highway in Eaton County for a single-vehicle crash.

When troopers showed up they found a 2014 Chrysler Town & Country van that had rolled numerous times and came to a rest on its roof.

Preliminary investigation shows the 30-year-old driver, the lone occupant of the van, was headed north on I-69 and had FaceTimed a friend and told her that she was tired.

MSP officials say it appears the driver may have fallen asleep and drifted off the freeway. When she overcorrected, she lost control of the van, which caused it to leave the road and overturn.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was ejected from the van.

Troopers and EMS personnel attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but she did not survive.

Authorities are unsure whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
