The San Francisco 49ers certainly have a tough situation on their hands.

San Francisco kicked off the 2024 National Football League season with a win against the New York Jets. While that was great, star running back Christian McCaffrey was ruled out due to a calf/Achilles injury.

McCaffrey currently is dealing with Achilles tendinitis which certainly is a tricky injury. Hopefully, he is able to return soon but Week 2 still is up in the air. Some have wondered whether or not he would be placed on the Injured Reserve. It's still unclear and general manager John Lynch didn't rule out a move to KNBR's Brian Murphy and Markus Boucher.

"Lynch on if the Niners may put McCaffrey on IR: 'If that's the right thing, it's what we'll do. First of all, we'll see how he's doing today after a good session yesterday. All options, as Kyle has said are on the table. We'll do what's right for Christian and what's right for our team.'"

If he were to be placed on the Injured Reserve, it would be a sign that the injury is more serious than some have speculated. Hopefully, that doesn't end up being the case. It really is up in the air right now whether or not he will play Week 2 or beyond. We should find out more information soon, but Achilles tendinitis is a tough injury.

Any calf/Achilles injury is concerning because it very easily can get worse. San Francisco shouldn't put him on the field until he is 100 percent ready to go. It is a long season and the 49ers are going to need the star back to make a deep run in the playoffs.
