The Batman: Part 2 is Set During Winter, says Director Matt Reeves

The Batman: Part 2 is going to take place during winter, according to director Matt Reeves.

It’s set following the events of HBO spinoff series The Penguin , which itself picks up just one week after the first film. " The Penguin story plays out over the next weeks that take you toward the end of the year,” Reeves tells Collider . “We don't play Christmas or New Years, but we're getting there."

That means when The Penguin ends, it’ll be around December, which is when The Batman: Part 2 starts. It’ll offer a markedly different tone to the first film, which takes place among the rain-soaked streets of Gotham. In fact, if Reeves decides to coat the fictional city in snow, it promises to divert from any Batman live-action film for years.

1992’s Batman Returns was a rare example of a largely winter-set Gotham, although we have seen more recent examples. Towards the end of 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises , Gotham is under heavy snowfall. At one point Scarecrow even forces some cops to walk out onto a frozen river at gun point. Mostly, though, Gotham is portrayed in the Spring and Summer months.

When asked if a trilogy is happening, Reeves replied "Yes, that is still the plan. I mean, it’s sticking very closely to the path we envisioned." That path? “I wanted the origin stories of these other characters of the Rogues Gallery. and that story was originally going to be the entrée into the next movie." So there might be more spinoff series coming.

Reeves continued, “Carmine Falcone is dead, he's had power for 20 years. And now, in the power vacuum, as Selina says to him, it's going to get bloody...some people will seize the chance to grab anything they can. And that is Oz.”

The Penguin premieres on September 19 on HBO. The Batman Part 2 is delayed until 2026 .
