Steve Spurrier Sets the Record Straight About Florida Gators QB DJ Lagway

The Florida Gators found themselves in a bit of a tough spot when Graham Mertz was forced to miss their Week 2 contest against the Samford Bulldogs.

That forced them to turn the ball over to a true freshman quarterback in DJ Lagway, who ended up putting together a wildly impressive performance for Florida (18/25, 456 YDS, 3 TD, 5 CAR, 16 YDS).

With Mertz back healthy now, it's clear that head coach Billy Napier has a big decision to make. If you ask former Gators legend Steve Spurrier, he believes that Lagway should be the team's starting quarterback moving forward.

There's no doubt that Lagway is the future of Florida's football program, but after his explosive outing in Week 2, it's fair to wonder whether he's already better than Mertz.

Spurrier clearly thinks that Lagway is already the Gators best quarterback, and while benching Mertz could be difficult, it could help Florida take a huge step forward this season.

It's certainly a tough call for Napier to make, and you can bet all eyes are going to be on him to see who he names the team's starter for their Week 3 contest against Texas A&M.
