Residents of Northern California can expect changing weather patterns as the weekend approaches, with gusty winds and potential rain in the forecast. According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, weak ridging over the region will keep conditions dry and seasonal through early Saturday. However, a shift is expected as a longwave trough brings cooler temperatures and possible thunderstorms by Sunday.

The current weather pattern is characterized by surface ridging along the coast, leading to gusty northwesterly winds, particularly near Cape Mendocino. While winds today are expected to be less intense than Thursday, they will still pick up this afternoon before diminishing further by Saturday.

By Sunday, a shortwave trough is forecast to move into the region, increasing the likelihood of precipitation, particularly in areas like Trinity and eastern Mendocino counties. Rainfall could arrive from the Central Valley, with thunderstorms also possible, especially in higher elevations like the Trinity Alps. Coastal areas may see less rain than inland regions, and another storm system is expected midweek, bringing additional precipitation to the area.
