F lavor Flav was once known as the hypeman of Public Enemy , complete with the “Yeahhhhh, boyyyyeee” and his trademark clock. He went on to be a reality star with The Flavor of Love, which helped him remain relevant beyond his rap career.

Now Flavor, born William Drayton, has evolved into his new chapter as a hypeman for women’s sports. He attended the Paris Olympics as an official promotional partner for the USA women’s water polo team and helped track athlete Veronica Fraley get her rent paid after she shared her struggles on social media.

Now, he’s come through on a promise made to Jordan Chiles, the U.S. gymnast who was stripped of her bronze medal in floor exercise after her successful appeal to change her score was overturned. Romanian gymnast Ana Bǎrbosu was awarded the medal in the nation’s capital days later.

Flavor promised via social media that he’d have a bronze clock made for Chiles, and at the MTV Video Music Awards earlier this week, he did just that, presenting her with the bejeweled pendant.

“Jordan, I know they tried to take your medal away from you,” Flavor said. “But you know what? I got you something that they can’t take away from you.”

Chiles was visibly moved by the gesture. She’s been on a victory lap for the gold medal she won as part of Team USA, showing up to New York Fashion Week and a New York Liberty game. But during an appearance at the Forbes Power Women’s Summit, she said the decision to strip her of the bronze medal was hurtful.

“The biggest thing that was taken from me was the recognition of who I was, not just my sport, but the person I am,” Chiles said, tearing up. “It’s about my skin color. It’s about the fact there were things that have led up to this position of being an athlete.”

Chiles, Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, and Simone Biles were part of the first all-Black gymnastics podium at the Olympics, which generated the viral moment of the two American gymnasts bowing to Andrade. While Bǎrbosu is for now the official recipient of the bronze medal as per the decision by the International Olympics Committee, USA Gymnastics, the sport’s governing body, has vowed to keep fighting for Chiles.

“I made history and I will continue to make history,” Chiles said. “I followed the rules and my coach followed the rules…we did everything that was totally and completely right.”
