(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Kane County Sheriff held a dedication ceremony Friday, unveiling a memorial to a police K9 killed on the job. Though, it was not without controversy.

The memorial is a statue of K-9 Hudson.

The Dutch Shepherd was shot to death accidentally by Sheriff’s Deputies when officers were firing at Jim Moriarty, an armed carjacking suspect. Moriarty died in the shooting with deputies after the Kane County Sheriff’s Office says the 38-year-old carjacked a woman at gunpoint.

The night before the shooting, Aurora Police had been on a stakeout outside Moriarty’s apartment building, watching for him. Kane County Sheriff’s Deputies, according to Aurora Police, showed up and compromised the operation.

The next day there was a pursuit and the shooting.

Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin was critical of Sheriff Ron Hain, and Hain of Irvin.

Hain was again critical during the memorial unveiling.

“They refused to work jointly with us, and this is the outcome of what happens when you refuse to communicate.”

Irvin had said earlier that the incident was likely preventable if the Sheriff had let Aurora officers do their jobs.
