Two of the 21st century’s greatest actors are teaming up with the biggest writer of the 1600s.

Starting in February 2025, Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal will co-star in an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Othello” for 15 weeks at Broadway’s Barrymore Theatre.

The 69-year-old Washington is playing the titular Othello; Gyllenhaal, 43, assumes the role of the two-faced Iago who manipulates the lead into believing his wife Desdemona (Molly Osborne) hasn’t been faithful.

This high-profile show won’t be the Broadway debut for either Washington or Gyllenhaal. Prior to “Othello,” Washington top-lined five (!) Great White Way shows. Most recently, he starred in a 2018 revival of “The Iceman Cometh.”

As for Gyllenhaal, he’s been in three B’way productions. His biggest splash was in Sondheim’s 2017 “Sunday in the Park with George” where he played George.

Prior to this reimagining of the classic text, the last “Othello” adaptation on Broadway was in 1982 and featured the late James Earl Jones and Christopher Plummer.

Fans that can’t wait to catch this star-studded “Othello” update can grab tickets as soon as today.

At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find on tickets was $179 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Other shows have seats starting anywhere from $189 to $529 before fees.

    “Othello” cast

Although it’s unlikely you’re unfamiliar with at least two members of the cast, here is a bit more about each of the major players in “Othello.”

Denzel Washington is a two-time Academy Award winner for his work in “Glory” and “Training Day.” And while he’s one of the last few bona fide, sure thing A-List movie stars that can guarantee box office receipts, he’s also an accomplished film director and veteran of the stage. Plus, he has history with Shakespeare; check out his work in Joel Coen’s spellbinding “Macbeth” for proof.

Jake Gyllenhaal has one of the most fascinating CVs of any actor of the past few decades. He’s headed heady thrillers (“Nightcrawler,” “Zodiac,” “Donnie Darko”) as well as thought-provoking dramas (“Brokeback Mountain,” “Prisoners”) and action pictures (“Road House,” “Ambulance”). Personally, we appreciate his work in John Mulaney’s “Sack Lunch Bunch” most.

Molly Osborne comes to “Othello” from London’s East End where she played Desdemona. Other notable roles of hers include the TV series “Call The Midwife” and short films “Path to Ecstasy,” “Age of Reason” and “Woman of Valour.”
