With the news setting in of Chiefs wide receiver Hollywood Brown being put on injured reserve for the foreseeable future, Kansas City must take a long, hard look at its receiver room.

Brown was the top free agent signing for the Chiefs during the offseason, and it was expected that he would help revitalize their passing attack. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen for at least a couple of months. K.C. is going to have to get through the bulk of the season without Brown as they chase its dream of a three-peat.

The question is, do the Chiefs have enough firepower at receiver to put themselves in the best position possible for a three-peat? Before we dive into that, let's take a look at the receivers who the Chiefs currently have on their 53-man roster and practice squad:

    53-man roster

    • Rashee Rice
    • Xavier Worthy
    • Justin Watson
    • JuJu Smith-Schuster
    • Mecole Hardman
    • Skyy Moore

    Practice squad

    • Nikko Remigio
    • Justyn Ross
    • Montrell Washington

Here is what Chiefs coach Andy Reid had to say on Friday when asked how he feels about what the team has at receiver without Brown:

"Yeah, so we'd love to have him (Brown)," Reid said. "I think you know that. But on the other hand, I think we've got some good guys, yeah, at that spot. We've got some depth there and feel good about that."

Where the Chiefs go from here

With Brown out, the Chiefs' receiving corps is basically the same as it was a year ago, switching out Marquez Valdes-Scantling for Xavier Worthy. While Worthy certainly appears that he'll be an upgrade over Valdes-Scanting, I'm not sure if that's going to be enough to get the K.C. offense back to what it has been in previous years.

We know by now that Hardman and Moore are not guys you want playing a significant amount of snaps. Watson is what he is - a good blocking receiver who knows the offense well and makes the occasional big play. Then there's Smith-Schuster, who has clearly lost a step and his play fell off mightily last year.

The Chiefs could, and likely will for the time being, call up a receiver off of the practice squad. To replace Brown's specific skillset, it will probably either be Remigio or Washington. Both provide a speed threat and could contribute as a return man on special teams.

It's certainly possible that Worthy is a stud as a rookie and Rice elevates his game to a Pro Bowl level. At the end of the day, however, the Chiefs drafted Worthy despite having just signed Brown for a reason. They knew they needed to add multiple guys to have quality depth. It may not end up being possible, but K.C. needs to stay vigilant of what receivers may come available via trade.

As far as the current free agent landscape goes, there isn't anybody available who is going to make an impact. If the Chiefs are going to accomplish the three-peat, they'll have to stick with the all-in mindset, meaning they potentially make a decision that helps the team now and deal with the ramifications later.
