New details have emerged about the Dallas Mavericks’ signing of Markieff Morris.

Morris, 35, is a veteran power forward coming off a 2023-24 NBA season, where he appeared in 26 games for the Mavericks. He averaged 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. He also shot 33.8% from the field and 35.7% from the three-point line. Before re-signing with the Mavericks, Morris played for the Phoenix Suns, Washington Wizards, Oklahoma City Thunder, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, and Brooklyn Nets. He was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Suns.

Morris was initially traded to the Mavericks on February 6, 2023, in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie, an unprotected 2029 first-round pick, and two 2027 and 2029 second-round picks. He initially re-signed with the Mavericks on September 6, 2023.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania posted on September 7, 2024, “Free agent F Markieff Morris has agreed on a deal to return to the Dallas Mavericks, sources tell The Athletic. The reigning Western Conference champions prioritized re-signing Morris, 34, who has served as a strong leader in the Mavs locker room entering his 14th NBA season.”

HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto recently reported more details surrounding Morris’ deal with the Mavericks. Scotto posted on September 11, 2024, “The Dallas Mavericks signed Markieff Morris to a one-year, non-guaranteed deal, league sources told HoopsHype. Morris will compete for a roster spot with Dallas. An agreement between both sides was first reported by The Athletic.”

ESPN’s Bobby Marks also added details surrounding Morris on top of Scotto’s post on X. Marks wrote, “Because Dallas is $493K below the first apron, Morris could only sign a non-guaranteed contract. If he makes the roster, Dallas would need to waive the non-guaranteed contract of AJ Lawson or make a trade.”

Lawson could be waived, but if he gets a waiver, the Mavericks arguably would be wrong to not give him a chance to develop and prosper.
