Controversy erupted in the wake of the San Francisco 49ers' win over the New York Jets, with some questioning the Niners' reporting of Christian McCaffrey's injury status.

McCaffrey was a surprise late scratch for the 49ers' season opener because of a calf problem and Achilles tendinitis. He had been listed as questionable after being limited in practice all week.

Jordan Mason took his place as the starting running back and racked up 147 yards and a touchdown on the ground, before then causing a stir when he said he was told the previous Friday he would be the starter.

That account was contradicted by head coach Kyle Shanahan and, ahead of the 49ers' Week 2 game with the Minnesota Vikings, the NFL essentially cleared San Francisco of any wrongdoing in terms of misreporting the injury.

A brief statement from the league said: "We looked into the 49ers’ reporting of the playing status of Christian McCaffrey for the team’s Monday night game against the New York Jets. We have found no evidence of a violation of the league’s Injury Report Policy in this matter."

The 49ers have already declared McCaffrey out for the Vikings game, with Shanahan conceding they are considering injured reserve for the reigning Offensive Player of the Year.
