Florida Panthers Hold Rookie Camp Before ’24 Tournament
13 hours ago
The Florida Panthers held their first rookie camp on Thursday in Fort Lauderdale at the Baptist Health IcePlex. After the workout, the Panthers headed to Nashville where the rookie tournament is being played this year. Most of the Panther rookies that are attending the tournament this year were in the Panthers Developmental Camp in July.

Along with the Panthers, the Carolina Hurricanes, Nashville Predators, and Tampa Bay Lightning will be playing in the rookie tournament this year. Geordie Kinnear, head coach of Florida’s AHL affiliate in Charlotte who runs the team’s development and rookie camps, emphasized that he and his staff want to help the youngsters be the best versions of themselves, on and off the ice.
Kinnear said, “You were drafted or invited for a particular reason. We want you to show that, and don’t try to do more than that.” The tournament games will be held at Ford Ice Center in Bellvue.
Florida’s game schedule is as follows:
Friday, Sept 13: Nashville vs. Florida, 2 p.m. ET
Saturday, Sept. 14: Carolina vs. Florida, 2 p.m. ET
Monday, Sept. 16: Florida vs. Tampa Bay, 10 a.m. ET
The Florida Panthers have had a short off-season since they are Stanley Cup champions. The Panthers raised the Cup in June and have since toured with it all over the world. It has been well worth the short off-season, but now it’s back to work for the Panthers with the new NHL season right around the corner. The Panthers' top rookie prospects will be attending this tournament which is by invitation only. The coaching staff will be working with these prospects ahead of the season to develop them into more skilled NHL players. The Florida team was also well-represented in the NHLPA tournament in Virginia this off-season. In particular, 20-year-old defenseman Mark Alscher is the first Florida Panthers player to be represented in the NHLPA Rookie Showcase since 2018. Alscher is one of the players that will be playing in the Nashville tournament. This is a great opportunity for the prospects to develop their skills and hopefully make it in the NHL one day. Most players will be playing for the Charlotte Checkers, the Panthers’ AHL minor league team. Even though players start out with the Charlotte Checkers, any player can be called up to the NHL in case of injuries that happen to Panther players. The Florida Panthers will open their pre-season schedule in a doubleheader against the Nashville Predators at Amerant Bank Arena on September 22 and start the regular NHL season on October 2 against their fierce rivals, the Tampa Bay Lightning.
