Massachusetts has 16 of the top hotels in the U.S., according to Michelin

Seven of them are in Boston.

Massachusetts has some of the most exceptional hotels in the world, according to the Michelin Guide.

Michelin recently named the best hotels in the U.S. in 2024 and 33 are in New England. Of those, 16 are in Massachusetts.

While the Michelin Star recognizes the most outstanding restaurants in the world, the Michelin Key does the same for hotels. Michelin-rated hotels receive a one, two, or three key rating. The 2024 Michelin Guide hotel selection in the U.S. now includes 16 three-key hotels, 70 two-key hotels, and 207 one-key hotels for a total of 293 properties.

“After selecting thousands of hotels across the globe for the Michelin Guide, it is now our privilege to specially highlight the creme de la creme of our selection. All our hotels excel in design, architecture, service and personality — the MICHELIN Key denotes the absolute most outstanding experiences in our selection,” wrote the Michelin Guide.

The three key properties indicate “an extraordinary stay,” the two key properties mark “an exceptional stay” and the one key properties mean “a very special stay,” according to the guide. The New England hotels honored are all one- and two-key properties. There aren’t any New England hotels on the three key list, which is dominated by California and New York hotels.

Michelin’s selection team used five criteria when deciding the top hotels: excellence in architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the neighborhood or setting.

The seven two key hotels in Massachusetts are found in Boston and the Berkshires. They are:

The nine one key hotels in Massachusetts are in Boston, Lexington, the Berkshires, and on Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. They are:

Faraway Martha’s Vineyard in Edgartown

Hob Knob in Edgartown

Granville House in Great Barrington

The Inn at Hastings Park in Lexington

The Brant on Nantucket

The Wauwinet on Nantucket

Nobnocket Boutique Inn in Vineyard Haven

“We are immensely proud to have received a Michelin Key in the 2024 Michelin Guide!” wrote Granville House on its website.

Other New England winners include four more two key properties and 13 more one key properties. The two key properties are: The Inn at Thorn Hill in Jackson, N.H.; Newport’s Castle Hill Inn & Resort and The Chanler at Cliff Walk; and Twin Farms in Barnard, Vermont.

The remaining one key properties are Connecticut’s Mayflower Inn in Washington; Maine’s Lincoln Hotel in Biddeford, Camden Harbour Inn in Camden, Cliff House Maine in Cape Neddick, AWOL Kennebunkport, Kennebunkport Captain’s Collection, and White Barn Inn & Spa, Auberge Resorts Collection, all in Kennebunkport, Blind Tiger Portland – Danforth Street and Blind Tiger Portland – Carleton Street, both in Portland; Rhode Island’s The Cliffside Inn and The Vanderbilt, Auberges Resorts Collection, both in Newport; and Vermont’s Blind Tiger Burlington in Burlington and The Woodstock Inn & Resort in Woodstock.

This is the second announcement of Michelin Keys in the U.S. and the first to include all U.S. states. The guide previously included only hotels from select locations. The Michelin Guide now includes more than 5,000 hotels worldwide.
