The San Francisco 49ers drafted wide receiver Ricky Pearsall number 31 overall out of Florida during this past spring's NFL Draft, but Pearsall has yet to play in a game.

Pearsall was shot through his chest and out the back during an attempted robbery in San Francisco's Union Square on August 31.

On Friday, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan gave a surprising update on the 24-year-old Pearsall, saying that he has begun rebuilding his body after the shocking and saddening turn of events.

"I was just talking to him yesterday," Shanahan said . "He just started working out again. I think it was a weight room workout yesterday. But yeah, he's back to conditioning, getting back in football shape, and getting back to (being) healthy."

The 49ers' offense has taken several hits this offseason and preseason culminating in running back Christian McCaffrey's recent calf/Achilles injury that is expected to sideline him for Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Shanahan cautioned that Pearsall will be taking things day-by-day and that no timetable has been given for a possible return given the severity of his injuries. He also seemed to provide hope for a return at some point earlier than is widely expected.

"It surprisingly heals a lot faster than you would think," Shanahan said. "When you tear your chest and stuff, you're out for the  year, but a bullet hole that goes through your chest and out the back, for some reason, heals a lot faster.

"You learn a lot about that stuff, but yeah, it's week-to-week, so I don't really know when (he'll play) but he's travelling with us today, and it's been a good step this week, getting him back in the workout weight room."
