Las Vegas Ballpark: A's New Home for 2028 Season

The Oakland A's have been based in Oakland since 1968, winning four World Series titles. The A's relocation would make them the second major sports franchise to move from Oakland to Las Vegas, following the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League, who moved to Las Vegas in 2020. The A's, with four stadiums, have had the most homes of any MLB team.

The New Las Vegas Stadium is a fixed-roof ballpark to be built on the Tropicana Hotel site. It will open for the 2028 MLB season. The new stadium will be the first time the Athletics have played in a new stadium. The Athletics will spend three seasons at West Sacramento's Sutter Health Park.

In May 2021, Major League Baseball permitted the Oakland Athletics to explore relocation possibilities should the team fail to get a replacement stadium for the Oakland Coliseum from the city of Oakland by 2024. Among these relocation possibilities included the Las Vegas Valley.

Negotiations between the City of Oakland and the Athletics for a new ballpark ended in April 2023, and the team moved forward with a new $1.5 billion 35,000-seat retractable stadium.

On May 4, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo announced a legislative package for the Athletics' proposed ballpark.

On May 9, the Athletics changed the proposal to a 30,000-seat partially retractable stadium on the site of the Tropicana Las Vegas. Plans to demolish the Tropicana and build a new 1,500-room hotel and casino are also in place. The project is expected to cost $1.5 billion, of which $380 million would come from public funds and the rest from the private sector.

The 33,000-fan-capacity domed stadium will feature six primary levels, with 30,000 fixed seats and an area for 3,000 standing-room-only ticket holders. The levels are broken down starting from the ground up, including service and field, lower suite, upper suite, upper concourse and upper deck.

The armadillo-shaped exterior structure was designed with baseball and the Las Vegas heat in mind. The ballpark's roof will feature a metal finish with translucent plastic panels.

Dubbed Drop the Trop, the implosion is scheduled for 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 9. Still, before the demolition, the A's and Tropicana owner Bally's Corp. will host an event with fireworks and a drone show planned.

The skeletons of the two Tropicana hotel towers need to be imploded before construction can begin on the site.

After the towers are brought down, crews will begin clearing the site for the A's" to begin construction. Construction will start in the second quarter of 2025.

Senate Bill 1 laid out strict workforce and community benefits requirements. The project must include 51 per cent women, minority, veteran, and disabled workers, with 15 per cent of the work awarded to small local businesses.

The new stadium will open for MLB's 2028 season.
