When you think of comfort food in Tennessee, a few dishes immediately come to mind, and one of the all-time favorites for any gathering is the classic Sausage Ball. Whether it's game day, a holiday party, or a simple family get-together, these delicious bites always bring smiles to the table. Sausage Balls, known for their perfect blend of cheesy goodness and spicy sausage, are simple yet packed with flavor. Their origin in the South makes them a staple in Tennessee kitchens, where they're often the go-to appetizer for any occasion.

The Southern Charm of Sausage Balls

In Tennessee, food is more than just a necessity; it’s part of the culture, tradition, and celebration. Sausage Balls are a perfect representation of Southern comfort food – combining rich, spicy sausage with sharp cheddar cheese and a hearty biscuit mix. Their crispy golden exterior contrasts with a savory, tender center that melts in your mouth, making them hard to resist.

Whether served at tailgating events, potlucks, or holiday feasts, Sausage Balls are incredibly versatile and easy to prepare. What makes them even more special is how customizable they are—you can choose between mild or spicy sausage, add in herbs or seasoning, and even adjust their texture by using a touch of milk.

    Recipe: Tennessee Style Sausage Balls

    Ingredients:

    • 1 pound spicy pork sausage (or mild if preferred)
    • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
    • 2 cups biscuit baking mix (e.g., Bisquick)
    • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
    • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
    • ½ teaspoon black pepper
    • ¼ cup milk (optional, for moister sausage balls)

    Instructions:

    1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
    2. Mix the Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the sausage, shredded cheddar cheese, biscuit mix, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. For a moister consistency, add the milk. Use your hands to mix everything together until all ingredients are well incorporated.
    3. Form the Sausage Balls: Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Leave about an inch of space between each ball to allow for slight expansion.
    4. Bake: Transfer the baking sheet to the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown. The sausage should be sizzling, and the cheese will melt and brown slightly.
    5. Serve: Remove the sausage balls from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving. They’re great served warm or at room temperature, making them perfect for any party setting.

The Perfect Addition to Any Table

Sausage Balls are a delightful blend of flavors and textures, making them a hit with all ages. The spicy sausage adds just the right kick, while the sharp cheddar cheese melts into the mix, creating a rich, savory bite in every ball. Whether you serve them for breakfast, as an appetizer, or a game-day snack, Tennessee-style sausage balls capture the heart of southern hospitality.

They can also be easily made in advance and reheated, making them a convenient choice for busy hosts or when you need to whip up something quick but impressive. Pair them with a dipping sauce, or simply enjoy them as-is. One thing’s for sure—they won’t last long once they hit the table!

Tennessee-style sausage balls are a beloved Southern comfort food, perfect for gatherings like game days, holidays, or casual get-togethers. This recipe brings together spicy pork sausage, sharp cheddar cheese, and a biscuit mix like Bisquick for an irresistible blend of flavors and textures.

Sausage balls can be easily tailored to taste preferences. Some recipes call for spicy sausage for extra kick, while others offer a milder version using breakfast sausage. You can also add a touch of milk for a softer texture, as suggested by variations like using two cups of Bisquick for a moister result(The Kitchen Magpie)(http://www.southyourmouth.com/). Another tip is to use freshly grated cheese to enhance moisture, and for an added twist, you can experiment with different types of cheese such as Gouda or Colby(Southern Cravings).

Sausage balls are typically served warm, often accompanied by dipping sauces like honey mustard, ranch dressing, or hot pepper jelly(Jan CAN Cook). They also freeze and reheat well, making them a convenient make-ahead option for busy hosts.

If you're looking for a simple yet delicious appetizer that embodies the warmth and richness of Southern cuisine, Tennessee-style sausage balls are the way to go!

Double the sausage and cut bisquick in 1/2. Been doing this for 40 yrs.

Charles, I've been making these for a long time, and you are spot-on. They are the best. And you are right about using Bisquick-- I tried them once using Jiffy Biscuit mix, and they had an off-flavor (I suspect it's because Jiffy has lard as one of its ingredients). Oh, and I only use Tennessee Pride sausage...
