Celtics ownership reportedly need to sell team due to loss of money over payroll

The Boston Celtics owners, the Grousbecks, are reportedly in a dispute on how to run the team, per the NY Post . The main problem is about the giant payroll, which the father, Irving, was against, and the son, Wyc, was all for.

For this upcoming year, the team is expected to lose $80 million dollars in luxury tax fines, after a year where they barely broke even winning the championship. The next season after that is expected to be even worse.

In the 2025-26 season, the Celtics will be spending half a billion dollars on payroll, so the luxury tax will be even higher with the new rules in place.

Wyc wanted to spend to keep the Celtics on top, but Irving wasn’t about losing money. That’s why the Grousbecks are selling the team, since the father does not want to lose money. And since Irving holds 20% while Wyc only holds 3%, what Irving says goes.

Due to the Celtics wanting $6 billion for the team, the sale might not be done for years. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver would rather the sale be done upfront, but is open to having it done in steps as a one-time exception.

Groups interested are the Fenway Sports Group, and Bain Capital, a private equity giant. However, FSG’s reported interest clashes with a previous report that they had dropped out of the race . They may be back in, but only time will tell.

You have to pay these insane salaries then have these players dictate to you who’s on the team political statements.

That’s what they get for over paying players and it’s not just the Celtics or basketball it’s all sports. Look at Swayman on the Bruins he thinks he’s worth 10 million a year 😡no one is worth for playing a sport!!!!
