Lee Corso picks Wyoming against 'BFC'

There are often some misnamed teams on sports broadcasts, but College GameDay gave us quite a notable one there Saturday. There, as part of his “Superdog” pick of the underdog Wyoming Cowboys, analyst Lee Corso said they were facing “BFC” rather than the BYU Cougars:

Corso starts that off with “Wyoming, plus nine and a half versus B, BFC.” He then goes onto analysis of the Cowboys. After that, fellow analyst Kirk Herbstreit makes sure the team name is correctly mentioned here, following Corso’s comments with “Tough game for Wyoming vs. BYU.”

And this isn’t the biggest of deals; it was clear from the graphics who Wyoming was facing, and Corso’s analysis was mostly on the Cowboys rather than their opponent, and mistakes do happen for everyone. It’s also possible that “BFC” was an intentional nickname. (But if so, it’s one that wasn’t clear or explained.)

But unlike some mistakes with schools with similar names, there doesn’t appear to be any obvious “BFC” out there. And this provides some more ammunition for those wondering why the 89-year-old Corso is still featured on GameDay each week, especially after the addition of another prominent former coach in Nick Saban. Some had thought Saban coming in might lead to Corso’s exit, but that wasn’t the case.

Corso certainly has been one of the most defining features of GameDay , working on the show since its 1987 start and since the 1993 decision to take it on the road. He’s kept working there despite a 2009 stroke, even with a shift to pre-scripting his appearances after that and with a lot of help from the rest of that team . And he’s said he wants to keep doing the show, and ESPN seems happy to still have him involved. And he’s still predicting quite a few games right, and his headgear picks (now in their 28th year!) still get a lot of attention:

But some of Corso’s comments and actions in recent years have drawn flak and other negative attention. And he’s also had notable health concerns that have caused him to miss shows. “BFC” instead of “BYU” definitely isn’t the biggest thing there, but it does give those wondering why Corso is still on the air weekly another point to cite.
