Public Input Sought for Future Development of Freedom Riders National Monument’s Bus Burning Site in Anniston

Anniston, AL – The Freedom Riders National Monument, in collaboration with the National Park Service, is inviting the community to participate in shaping the future of the historic Bus Burning Site on Old Birmingham Highway in Calhoun County, Alabama. This site, infamous for the 1961 attack on a bus carrying Freedom Riders, is a crucial part of the national monument that also includes the Greyhound Bus Station in downtown Anniston.

Two public meetings are scheduled to gather input on the site’s development. The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, from 11 AM to 2 PM at the Greyhound Bus Station, located at 1031 Gurnee Ave, Anniston. The second meeting will take place from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Anniston Meeting Center, Room C, situated at 1615 Noble St, Anniston.

The National Park Service is developing a Master Plan for the Bus Burning Site, aiming to provide management guidance, development concepts, and conceptual designs to honor the Freedom Rides and the Freedom Riders. The planning team has released preliminary management and design concepts for public review, available through a newsletter and online StoryMap. Public comments are being accepted from September 9 to October 9, 2024.
