(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Aurora dedicated a street to honor a longtime teacher.

Laura Waegner, 79, is a well-loved retired teacher who taught at Holy Angels School in Aurora for 54 years. She even wound up teaching the grandchildren of some of her first students, before calling it a career in May .

Back on May 17, Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin declared the day Laura Waegner Day in Illinois’ second largest city.

“To have someone that has served as a teacher for over five decades, that has taught parents, children and grandchildren, that is huge,” Waegner said back in May while reflecting on her career.

She told WBBM Newsradio then about what made her relationship with students so good.

“If they know that you really care about them, I think that makes that relationship work.”

On Friday, Kensington Place outside Holy Angels School became known on an honorary basis as Laura Waegner Way.

Laura Waegner looks back on her teaching career this way.

“I really enjoy the kids and I learn. As they said, ‘I’m the one who’s blessed.’”

Waegner taught sixth, seventh and eighth grade Social Studies.
