Wrexham Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney described as 'monsters'

Wrexham executive director Humphrey Ker has jokingly referred to club co-chairmen Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as "monsters" after it was announced that he will be running a marathon.

The Red Dragons figure had previously vowed that he would be prepared to run the distance of 26 miles for the Wrexham Miners Project at an AGM meeting earlier in the year. Making the vow to the cause, Ker now has less than a year to get himself ready for the Manchester Marathon, which takes place next April.

The Welsh outfit had already named the initiative as its charitable partner for the current campaign, with club having committed to raise awareness and assist with their objectives. The Wrexham Miners Project aims to preserve and celebrate the area's proud mining community, while also looking to breathe new life into the Miners Rescue Station landmark building.

Having previously promised to take part in a marathon "if that's what it takes", charity patron Ker has now been tasked with coming good on his words. In an amusing video clip posted on Wrexham's social media, co-owner Reynolds said: "We'll be comfortably watching from a distance. But, you know, we're going to be right beside you in spirit."

Meanwhile, McElhenney joked: "And we're recording this video chat too so we can post it online and encourage more people to donate, to which Ker queried: I suppose you're going to film the marathon too?", as the "It's Always Sunny" funnyman then replied: "I think we all know the answer to that."

Following on from this, Ker then took to Twitter/X to confirm that he will be running the marathon as he quoted the post in question before issuing a light-humored dig at the Wrexham co-chairmen, saying: "Look, @WrexhamMiners is a brilliant cause, sure, but making me run a marathon is the work of monsters."

As part of their commitment to the charity, both Reynolds and McElhenney have donated £26,200 ($34,383) each as the project aims to raise £250k ($328k) through donations. At the time of writing the fundraiser has tallied up £60,118 (78,895) following donations from over 200 members of the public.

Afterwards, the club executive director also remarked: "I can’t really think of anything I would like to do less as my principle form of exercise is walking to the petrol station to buy a snickers ice cream, but the opportunity to secure these funds for The Wrexham Miners Project was too good to turn down.

"I have bought a pair of trainers and a huge vat of anti-chafing cream," he continued, as he then expressed his hope that his efforts will attract more donations, saying: "If anyone feels inspired by the Chairmen’s generosity, all donations gratefully received. £2.62, £26.20, £262 – no amount too large or small."

Previously, Wrexham vowed to "do our part to support this vital work for both Wrexham’s past and future," adding: "With many fans, and fan groups, asking the Club for ways that they can help both the Club and the local community, financially, Wrexham AFC Community Trust has set up a JustGiving page, with all of the funds raised going to The Wrexham Miners Project."
