Florida Manufacturing Giant to Open $238M Facility in India, Promising 5,000 Jobs After US Layoffs

Florida-based manufacturing giant, Jabil, is making headlines again—this time for creating 5,000 new jobs. But there's a catch: those jobs are being created in India, not in Florida or anywhere else in the U.S. This news comes on the heels of recent layoffs in the U.S., sparking mixed reactions from employees and job seekers alike.

For those who might not know, Jabil is a global company that operates across a variety of markets, from healthcare to smartphones to automotive products. Headquartered in Florida, the company has a massive workforce of over 140,000 employees worldwide. While some employees on Indeed praise the company for its relaxed work environment, others have voiced concerns about management and the human resources department, giving Jabil an overall rating of 3.8 out of 5 stars.

Now, let’s get to the big news. Jabil recently announced a $238 million investment to build a new manufacturing facility in Tiruchirappalli, India. According to a social media post by Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, M. K. Stalin, this new facility is expected to create 5,000 jobs. It’s a significant move for the company as it continues to expand its global footprint.

However, not all news surrounding Jabil has been positive in recent months. In the summer of 2024, the company laid off 130 employees at its Albuquerque facility. Earlier, in the spring of 2023, Jabil cut 200 jobs in Northern California, following the layoff of over 1,000 employees during the 2022 holiday season. These job cuts have left some questioning Jabil’s strategy of creating jobs overseas while cutting positions at home.

Despite the layoffs, there are still job openings at Jabil’s headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida. Positions such as Quality Engineer, Master Coater, and Master Inspector are currently listed on job sites like Indeed.

For Florida residents and U.S. employees, the creation of thousands of jobs overseas while domestic layoffs continue is a tough pill to swallow. Jabil’s investment in India is part of its global growth plan, but many are left wondering what this means for the company’s future in the U.S. Will more layoffs follow, or will we see further investment back home? Only time will tell, but for now, Jabil’s focus seems to be on expanding its international operations.

What are your thoughts? Is this a smart global business move, or does it leave American workers behind?
