Conference play began Friday for a handful of WPIAL teams — who also got to enjoy uneventful weather conditions for the first time since Week 0. Along the way, there were numerous big-yardage showings from local players.

This season, KDKA Radio will again nominate players each week to join the KDKA Radio Super 7 Awards watch list. Every Monday, a new crop of players will be unveiled based on their efforts that previous Friday night. At the end of the year, KDKA Radio will announce the winners of the award for each WPIAL classification, as well as the Pittsburgh City League.

Here are the top performances from Week 3:

    Luke Kosko, Thomas Jefferson

Following a thrilling overtime win over McKeesport a week earlier, Thomas Jefferson could have been in for a letdown game Friday night.  That ended up being far from the case.

Kosko delivered big, passing for 331 yards and three touchdowns in a 44-7 win over a strong Avonworth program.

The 6-foot-4, 210 pound junior has picked up Division I offers from Charlotte and Marshall, but has committed to Cincinnati to play baseball.

Thomas Jefferson is now 4-0 this season and hosts rival West Mifflin Friday.

    Jay’mere Ellis, Penn Hills

After a challenging start to the season, Penn Hills got into gear Friday night in a major way.

The Indians trounced Fox Chapel 54-0 to pick up their first victory of the season.

Ellis showed his dual threat abilities with 158 passing yards and two touchdowns, and 102 rushing yards with a score on the ground, as well.

The senior has picked up an offer from Central State.

    Mason Dixon, Central Valley

With a name like Mason Dixon, you’d think the Central Valley senior would play on the… line.

Instead, he runs behind it, through it and past it, and did so Friday night to help the Warriors grab a much-needed win.

Dixon racked up 112 rushing yards and two scores, and caught two touchdowns for 73 more yards in a 49-0 victory over McGuffey.

The senior also made six tackles on defense in the win.

    Jaivin Peel, Western Beaver

It was an interesting offseason for Peel, who broke the WPIAL’s freshman passing record a year ago for Western Beaver.

This summer, the sophomore was set to transfer to Central Catholic, but instead returned to Lincoln Park, which co-ops with Western Beaver for football. And the Golden Beavers are sure glad he did.

Despite dealing with an illness during the week, Peel passed for 244 yards and four touchdowns, and ran for another score, in a 49-6 win over Beaver Falls Saturday.

The 2024 high school football season continues Friday, as KDKA Radio will bring you broadcast coverage of Trinity at Bethel Park.
