Double shooting in the Bronx kills man, injures another, adding to string of gun violence

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A double shooting in the Bronx on Saturday night killed a 31-year-old man and hospitalized another, the latest in a week of rampant gun violence across the borough.

The shooting happened just after 9:30 p.m. on Saturday where Sheridan Avenue and McClellan Street meet in Concourse.

Upon arrival, officers found 31-year-old Sakou Saho, who lived in Mott Haven, shot multiple times in the torso. He was transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/ Lincoln and pronounced dead.

A 49-year-old man was also grazed in the stomach. EMS took him to the same hospital, but in stable condition.

The shooting comes one day after three shootings in the Bronx killed one man and injured two others.

Within blocks and hours of one another , a 24-year-old was killed and a 42-year-old man was shot while standing in a bodega in Morris Heights. The 24-year-old was shot multiple times in the back, while the older man was grazed in the head by a bullet.

The fatal shooting took place at about 9:30 p.m. at 1911 Anthony Ave., and the bodega shooting happened at an establishment near East 180th St. and Grand Concourse just after midnight. Police suspect a dog walker, clad in all black, was the shooter in the bodega assault.

Not far from these shootings, in Morris Park, a 44-year-old was shot twice in the torso on Williamsbridge Road at about 11:30 p.m., police said.

There have been no arrests in any of the weekend shootings, and investigations are ongoing.

An earlier fatal shooting, that occurred Wednesday morning, prompted the anti-gun violence group Bronx Rises Against Gun Violence to organize a rally at the shooting site Saturday night. It was held at 6 p.m. near East 180th Street and Creston Avenue.

Rafael Vasquez, 32, was shot in the back and face at the Fordham Heights intersection at about 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, police said. He was rushed to Saint Barnabas Hospital in critical condition, but succumbed to his injuries.

Police announced on Saturday that a suspect, 32-year-old Kelvin Mata, was arrested for the shooting on Thursday and charged with manslaughter, three counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance and criminal possession of a firearm.

“Some community members are scared to come outside because of the shootings, others unfortunately think it’s a norm,” Bronx Rises Against Gun Violence’s Jeremy Molina said Saturday, according to ABC7 . “And that's what we're here to do, try to change that norm. It's not normal to hear shots.”
