JD Vance Awkwardly Walks Back Claim That Trump Would Veto a National Abortion Ban: ‘I’ve Learned My Lesson On Speaking for the President’

Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) told NBC’s Kristen Welker Sunday he would no longer attempt to speak for his running mate former President Donald Trump without first speaking to him.

Vance said he had learned a “lesson” in the five days since Trump, on the debate stage last week, did not commit one way or the other to signing or vetoing a bill banning abortions — should such legislation come across his desk. Trump portrayed the issue as a pointless hypothetical.

Trump told ABC News during the debate any questions about the issue were purely conjectural as Congress would never pass such legislation.  He also said he and Vance had not had a discussion on the issue.

He further took a victory lap on the issue of abortion being returned to the states in a post- Roe v. Wade America. After the debate, Vance spoke to numerous networks and deflected when he was pressed as to why he made claims Trump would veto such a bill. He was mostly evasive on the issue.

On Sunday’s Meet the Press , Welker revisited the topic, which Vance appeared humbled to address.

“His point is that it was a hypothetical and not a hypothetical that has any chance of actually crossing his desk,” Vance said.

Welker replied, “I take your point, but just to put a fine point on this, you’re saying he wouldn’t support [a national abortion ban]. So would he veto it?”

Vance responded, “Kristen, I think that I’ve learned my lesson on speaking for the president before he and I have actually talked about an issue. What he has said at the debate, which is quite explicit, is he doesn’t support a national ban. He thinks it’s ridiculous to talk about vetoing a piece of legislation that isn’t going to come before the president in the first place.”

Why does Vance remind me of that one Vase shop owner from the animated movie Hercules where he tells the people of Thebes about Hercules to "G -- Ge-- Get that FRREAK away from here!" That's Vance as he breaks everyones trust with his walked back explainations.
