Jay Glazer Clarifies Major Deshaun Watson Contract News

    2024-09-15

NFL insider Jay Glazer took to social media to clarify a notable report about the contract of polarizing Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Watson's contract is a topic of conversation following a new allegation of sexual assault. A woman alleges that Watson “roughly sexually assaulted” her in 2020 in her apartment while she was getting ready for a date with him.

Watson was suspended for 11 games and fined $5 million following accusations from more than 20 women of sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior during massage therapy sessions.

The Browns signed Watson to a fully guaranteed $230 million deal after landing him via a blockbuster trade in 2022. The NFL is investigating the new claim and there are reports that the Browns could potentially get out of Watson's deal — which runs through the 2026 season.

“Here’s the deal, the original contract that was fully guaranteed for Deshaun Watson actually had protections in there, even if he got suspended for the 2022 or 2023 seasons. He still would have not lost any of his guarantees,” Glazer said on the Fox pregame show on Sunday. “Very quietly, in August, the Browns restructured his deal. When they restructured it, they did not put the same protections in for the next several years. If they have a suspension moving forward, there could be a chance they could go get some of those guarantees. Don’t know why they got it taken out, but they took it out.”

Shortly after the report, Glazer clarified Watson's contract situation in a post on X.

"I think I screwed up how I explained Watson’s contract this AM," Glazer said. "There was a clause to protect him in 2022-23 even in case of suspension. I said they took out those protections when they restructured deal in Aug but that was off as they didn’t have that clause in the original deal for 2024-26. My bad."

After a disappointing Week 1, Watson got off to a good start against the Jaguars on Sunday. He completed 7 of 8 passes on the Browns' opening drive and finished it off with a touchdown run.

Interesting but the salary cap hit if he is traded or released remains the problem. Unless they have a bad season giving them a top 5 pick, it will be next to impossible to procure a franchise quarterback. The rest of their offense is good enough to make up the difference.
