DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police are investigating the city’s 10th homicide after a driver crashed his vehicle after suffering a gunshot wound.

At around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, police were called to a car crash on 2nd Avenue and University Avenue. The call informed police that the vehicle left the roadway and hit the retaining wall.

Officers on scene found that the driver of the vehicle, a 24-year-old man, was critically injured by a gunshot wound. Medics transported the driver to the hospital, where he died later Sunday morning.

DMPD located a crime scene at 1443 2nd Avenue, that indicated gunfire.

Through their preliminary investigation, police believe that the man was trying to drive himself to the hospital.

Officers are continuing their investigation and interviewing witnesses. This is a developing story.

This comes as Des Moines Police are also investigating the city’s ninth homicide of the year, which also took place in the early hours of September 15.

“When we have two [homicides] back to back like this, it creates a significant strain on our resources. We are prepared to deal with this, but you have detectives that are working around the clock right now,” said Des Moines Police Sergeant Paul Parizek.
