Grading Seahawks QB Geno Smith for an exceptional game in win over Patriots

If last week's win over the Denver Broncos was too comfortable for your tastes as a Seattle Seahawks fan, they did not disappoint this week. Facing the New England Patriots in what turned out to be a magnificent, physical and hard-fought game down to the end, the Seahawks pushed through and came out the other side with a 23-20 win in overtime , replete with the usual heart attack tension in the clutch that we've come to expect from this team.

Stars like DK Metcalf, JSN, Boye Mafe and Leonard Williams all deserve a ton of credit for getting the team over the finish line. However, none if it would have been possible if not for another almost-perfect game from starting quarterback Geno Smith .

For the second straight week Smith had to deal with pass protection issues, especially from starting guards Laken Tomlinson and Anthony Bradford. Smith handled the pressure better than at the beginning of the season opener, though. Despite taking three sacks and seven quarterback hits, Smith kept his composure and didn't throw an interception or even a single turnover-worthy ball that we could tell.

Smith's receivers let him down several times too, with at least four drops being counted on the broadcast. One or two of them might have been questionable but the point stands that Smith could have used more reliable hands, especially in a couple of key moments.

The run game couldn't get going either, as Seattle's linemen got beaten up by the Pats. So, in the end it was all on Geno Smith, and he carried them to another win. His line for the day was 33/44 for 327 yards, one touchdown, zero interceptions and a passer rating of 103.1.

Geno Smith Week 2 grade vs. Patriots: A

Last week we ended up giving Smith a B- grade , mostly due to the early errors on the sack and the interception that finished the first drive of the game. That might have been harsh, but we're also fair. There was nothing not to like about Smith's performance today, and his production considering the context and the surprisingly sticky Patriots defense was phenomenal. Easy A.
