‘We Do … Every Single Day’: Democratic Gov Corrects False Kamala Harris Debate Claim About U.S. Troops In Combat Zones

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore , a Democrat, carefully corrected the false claim made by party nominee Vice President Kamala Harris at the presidential debate last week that no members of the American military are in combat zones anywhere in the world.

“We do have people who are in harm’s way every single day,” said Moore.

The governor spoke with anchor Margaret Brennan on the latest Face the Nation from CBS News on Sunday, discussing the election and other topics, including last week’s presidential debate between Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump .

Brennan played a clip from the debate in which Harris made the claim that “there is not one member of the United States military who is in active duty in a combat zone in any war zone around the world, the first time this century.”

“That’s false. That’s alienating the military families,” said Brennan of the claim that the ABC debate moderators David Muir and Linsey David did not fact-check during the event.

Brennan asked Moore what Harris intended by the false statement, a question that presumes without evidence that Harris didn’t really mean to lie.

Moore obliged the framing by replying that he felt the intent was to “counter” the “convictions of the Trump administration that somehow our world was safer under him.”

But, the governor and former member of the military himself said, “we do have people who are in harm’s way every single day. We have – we have soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines, Coast Guardsmen who every single day are out there with our flag on their shoulder and who are defending our freedoms and defending our values.”

Harris’s false claim also had soft fact-checks from sites such as Politifact which only rated it “mostly false” despite it being factually untrue.

BRENNAN : Let me ask you about something on the debate stage that the vice president said. I know you served in the Army and you deployed to Afghanistan.

During the debate, Vice President Harris said this:

HARRIS (VIDEO CLIP) : As of today, there is not one member of the United States military who is in active duty in a combat zone in any war zone around the world, the first time this century,

BRENNAN : That’s false. That’s alienating the military families. What was the intent?

MOORE : Well, I think what was – what the intent was – was that this is not, you know, counter to the – to the convictions of the Trump administration that somehow our world was safer under him, or we had less people in conflict. That is just not true.

But I think the really important thing to remember is, is that we do have people who are in harm’s way every single day. We have – we have soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines, Coast Guardsmen who every single day are out there with our flag on their shoulder and who are defending our freedoms and defending our values.
