Rising Waters and High Winds: Eastern NC Gears Up for Potential Tropical Storm Impacts

NEWPORT/MOREHEAD CITY — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:42 AM EDT on September 15, 2024.

Tropical Threat Approaches Eastern North Carolina

The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, NC has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for several coastal counties, including Coastal Onslow, East Carteret, and West Carteret, as a potential tropical cyclone approaches the region. The system, located approximately 200 miles south-southwest of Morehead City, is moving northwest at 7 mph with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. This weather event is expected to impact eastern North Carolina with heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal flooding over the next few days.

    Heavy Rain and Flooding Expected

Forecasters are warning of rainfall totals between 3 to 7 inches, with higher amounts possible, especially in areas south of Highway 70. This could lead to localized flash flooding in low-lying, urban, and poor drainage areas. A Flood Watch has been issued from Monday morning through Tuesday afternoon for portions of eastern North Carolina, including Beaufort, Greene, Martin, and the Northern Outer Banks. Residents in these areas should be prepared for quickly rising waters and hazardous driving conditions.

    Coastal Impacts and Rip Currents

Coastal areas can expect minor storm surge with inundation of 1 to 3 feet above ground level, particularly along shorelines and in low-lying spots. Moderate beach erosion and ocean overwash are also possible, which may lead to dangerous conditions on roads near the shore. Mariners are advised to avoid the water as strong winds and rough seas will create treacherous conditions.

    Tornado Threat Looms

The storm also brings a threat of isolated tornadoes across eastern North Carolina, with the greatest risk occurring from Monday into Tuesday. Tornadoes associated with tropical systems can form quickly, making it crucial for residents to have multiple ways to receive warnings and to be ready to take shelter immediately.

Preparing for Wind and Power Outages

Tropical storm-force winds could begin affecting coastal areas late Sunday night through Monday evening, with potential impacts including scattered tree damage and power outages. The winds may be strong enough to cause damage to structures such as porches, awnings, and sheds. Residents should secure any loose items around their property and be prepared for possible power disruptions.
