Frustrated Trevor Lawrence: ‘We Suck Right Now’

Trevor Lawrence was very candid in his assessment of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ lackluster offensive performance through the first two weeks of this season.

The former Clemson star quarterback was clearly frustrated after the Jaguars scored just one touchdown in their 18-13 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Lawrence met with the media following the game and was asked how stunned he was by Jacksonville’s offense over the last six quarters, a span in which the Jags have put only 13 points on the board.

Jacksonville (0-2) was shut out in the second half of its 20-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 1 before being limited to a pair of field goals and a 4-yard touchdown run by Travis Etienne in Sunday’s defeat against the Browns.

“We suck right now. I’m pretty shocked,” Lawrence said. “Obviously we had a great offseason, great training camp, and we gotta figure it out. We know we’ve got a good group. We’ve got good players and we can be a really good offense, but clearly we’re not. So, everybody’s got to take accountability, look in the mirror and fix it.”

Against the Browns, Lawrence completed 14-of-30 passes for 220 yards and had 45 rushing yards on two carries, including a 33-yard run. He was sacked four times, including a sack in the end zone that resulted in a safety late in the fourth quarter.

Through two games this season, Lawrence is 26-of-51 passing for 382 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. The Jags have averaged only 15 points and 295 total yards per game over the first two weeks, while their defense has done its part by allowing a total of 38 points through two games.

“I gotta play better. I’m the leader of this offense. It’s on me,” Lawrence said. “The wideouts gotta play better, the line’s got to play better, running backs gotta play better, we gotta coach better – it’s everybody, honestly. But we gotta take charge — we’re standing around waiting on somebody to make a play. Defense is playing their ass off the last two weeks. If a team doesn’t score more than 20 points, we should win every week.”

Lawrence, now in his fourth NFL season after being drafted first overall in 2021, lamented a multitude of miscues that have contributed to Jacksonville’s offensive struggles early in the 2024 campaign.

“We can’t finish in the red zone today, too many mistakes getting in and out of the huddle, communication wasn’t good,” Lawrence said. “It’s a lot of things, and fortunately or unfortunately, it’s what pisses you off after a game – a lot of it we control. We control it but we’re not doing it right, so until we do it right, it’s a different story.

“So, we know the things we gotta work on, and we gotta find a rhythm as an offense. Too many good players to perform like that, really the last two weeks.”

Lawrence and the Jags will try to right the ship offensively when they return to action Sept. 23 for a Week 3 road matchup against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills (2-0) on Monday Night Football (7:30 p.m., ESPN).
