Chase , who is yet to agree on a contract extension with the Bengals, lost his cool in the fourth quarter against the Chiefs and was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct when aggressively confronting an official. Burrow had to restrain Chase and push the receiver back to stop a potential ejection for the receiver, but then the two Bengals stars began exchanging words.
The Bengals receiver felt as though Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie should have been penalized on the play, but Chase ended up being the player receiving the flag for his outburst. It's been a frustrating start to the season for the Bengals who are currently 0-2, and Chase has been quiet with 97 yards off 10 receptions for no touchdowns through the opening two weeks.
Chase hinted that he's looking to surpass that deal, but so far has ignored Jefferson's advice about how to handle himself this season. "I hope that he gets the contract that he's looking for, but I also hope that he plays it smart and not let it get in the way of, you know, his greatness and being on that field," Jefferson said when asked about Chase's contract situation before the start of the 2024 season.
The Bengals receiver was the talk of the offseason, despite not participating in training camp. Chase then set a Sept. 6 deadline for his contract to be extended, but the Bengals didn't strike an agreement in time and may wait until after this season.
"We are pretty close (to agreeing on a deal), few numbers need to be switched around and changed in places," Chase said to reporters when discussing his situation. "We've been doing this for the past six to seven months, back and forth. It's been a long process. I'm pretty sure they know what I want."
The 24-year-old is one of the best receivers in the league, although, in his opinion, he's No. 1. "I know for a fact I am," Chase said when being asked if he thinks he is the best in his position.
Chase's slow start to the season is expected after not participating in camp, but his attitude on the field so far could work against him in the future. According to ESPN , all talks between Chase and the Bengals are currently off, and unless Cincinnati suddenly agrees to his demands then negotiations won't pick back up until next year.
The report also states that Chase feels as though the Bengals misled him as the receiver claims they promised an extension at the end of last season. In response, Chase has taken out a $50 million insurance policy for this season to protect himself against injury and any potential lost earnings.
Chase was named Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2021 with 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns, in a year that almost saw the Bengals win the Super Bowl. Chase is in the final year of his four-year rookie contract worth $30.8 million, but the receiver wants to earn more than $30 million per season moving forward.
